Spring Academic All-Big Ten Selections Announced

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference office released its spring 2016 Academic All-Big Ten Teams on Wednesday (June 1), with 136 Michigan student-athletes earning recognition for their work in the classroom.
U-M had 76 honorees in the fall and 70 in the winter, giving them 282 total in 2015-16.
Criteria for making the Academic All-Big Ten team includes being a letterwinner in at least their second academic year at their institution and maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
The breakdown of the 136 Michigan student-athletes on the list includes six from baseball, five from men's golf, 15 from men's lacrosse, three from men's tennis, 12 from men's track and field, four from women's golf, 18 from women's lacrosse, 25 from rowing, 12 from softball, four from women's tennis, 19 from women's track and field and 13 from water polo.
The list includes two NCAA Elite 90 Award recipients as junior rower Kinsey Vear (evolutionary anthropology) and senior water polo player Danielle Johnson (sport management) headline the list of honorees. Softball's Sara Driesenga, who is earning a master's degree in social work, is also a CoSIDA Academic All-America selection.
The Distinguished Scholar Award will be awarded at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school.
