
Big Ten Names 66 Wolverines as Distinguished Scholars

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference office announced the 2015-16 Distinguished Scholars award recipients today (Wednesday, July 6), with 66 University of Michigan student-athletes earning recognition for their work in the classroom over the last year.
The 66 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars are the most in school history and the first time Michigan topped 60 individuals since the honor started in 2009. It is the fifth straight year U-M has increased its total with 57 in 2015, 55 in 2014, 53 in 2013, 49 in 2012 and 37 in 2011.
The list includes student-athletes who recorded a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year. The Wolverines' list is comprised of 21 men and 45 women across 24 sports. Women's track and field led all programs with 11 selections, nine of whom also met the award criteria for cross country.
Leading the way for U-M are NCAA Elite 90 Award winners Kinsey Vear (rowing) and Danielle Johnson (water polo) along with CoSIDA Academic All-Americans Erin Finn (women's track and field/cross country), Sara Driesenga (softball), PJ Ransford (men's swimming and diving) and Ali Thomason (water polo).
Eight individuals recorded an unblemished 4.0 GPA over the last academic year. They are Adena Coste (rowing), Vear (rowing), Corinne Harris (women's soccer), Niki Wilkinson (women's soccer), Ransford (men's swimming and diving), Davis Crocker (men's tennis), Finn (women's track and field/cross country) and Anna Pasternak (women's track and field/cross country).
