Women's Track & Field: 1,500-meter Run Semifinals
Nicole Sifuentes ran in the second semifinal heat Sunday night, starting in lane 10 alongside world record-holder Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopa. American Jenny Simpson took the race out quickly from the gun, knowing 4:05.60 was the non-automatic qualifying time to beat from the first heat of the night, and Sifuentes followed on her heels, using with the same aggressive approach that advanced her to the semifinals earlier in the weekend. As the lead pack grew more and more crowded, Sifuentes remained in the top four but was passed by Didaba, Great Britain's Laura Muir and Violah Cheptoo Lagat of Kenya over the final 250 meters. She finished seventh in 4:08.53, two places shy of a place in Tuesday's final.

Michigan alumnus Bora Gulari and his partner, Louisa Chafee, used three top-10 finishes to climb to ninth place in the overall standings -- after starting the day in 12th -- and qualify for the medal race in the Nacra 17 Mixed competition. The duo, which ranked as low as 18th of 20 teams after boat issues forced two scores of 21 points on the competition's second day, closed out the 12 races of the opening series with seven straight top-10 finishes, including three inside the top five. Gulari and Chafee turned in a third-place showing in the day's final race in a time of 32:17, hanging among the top three boats through all five marks. They enter the medal race with 98 points -- 19 points outside the top five and 26 outside the top three. The medal race counts for double points.
