For the game, the flag of each military branch as well as a POW/MIA flag will be flown around the stadium as all veterans and service members will be recognized during the game.
The Patriot Parachute Team, a team of professional parachutists who formerly served as active duty Navy SEALs, will jump into the stadium as part of the pregame festivities. Also during pregame, a moment of silence will be held to remember all of the brave American servicemen and women who have given their lives in defense of their country.
During the national anthem, two large American field flags will be held by over 150 veterans and service members.
At halftime, the Michigan Marching Band will perform a musical tribute "Summon the Heroes" to honor the heroes and victims of 9/11 and the resiliency of the American spirit. United States Air Force bagpiper, Master Sgt. David Vittetoe will perform "Amazing Grace" while a 100-yard American flag will be unfurled by military veterans and service members.
In the third quarter, Retired Lt. Col. Charles Kettles, an Ypsilanti native, will be recognized as the Veteran of the Game. Kettles recently received the Medal of Honor -- the nation's highest military award -- 49 years after serving. Kettles led a platoon of UH-1Ds helicopters to provide support to the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division that was under ambush by Vietnamese soldiers. Kettles helped to evacuate the wounded, and upon realizing there were eight troops left on the ground, volunteered to rescue them by himself, disregarding the enemy fire and his own safety to save his comrades. The rescue mission was successful.
