ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team opened up the home portion of its Big Ten Conference ledger with a 2-0 setback against the No. 3 Indiana Hoosiers Wednesday (Sept. 14) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The sides were even in shots on goal at four, but the Hoosiers capitalized on a pair of theirs.

Jack Hallahan
Michigan was led offensively by sophomore Francis Atuahene with the five shots, with two coming on frame. He had the first Wolverine chance of the night in the 22nd minute, as he controlled a ball at the top of the box, spun and had his shot blocked.
No. 3 Indiana got on the board first in the 27th minute. Rashad Hyacenth made a darting run down the right flank and sent a ball inside the six that was tapped home in traffic by Billy McConnell to give IU the lead.
Michigan had a golden chance nine minutes later off a set piece from senior Rylee Woods. The free-kick specialist sent a service in from the left flank inside the six that found the head of bounding classmate Lars Eckenrode, and the attempt looked destined for goal until IU goalkeeper Colin Webb tipped the shot off the crossbar to safety.
Early in the second half, freshman Jack Hallahan had a free kick from 25 yards out left side that found the head of sophomore Peter Brown, but the shot went high. Two minutes later, Hallahan continued to give the IU back four fits, as he sent a through ball to Atuahene, who blew by his defender, but a right-footed flick could not cut the lead in half.
After IU made it 2-0 in the 77th minute on a Richard Ballard goal, the Maize and Blue continued to press on with a pair of chances from Hallahan and Atuahene.
Next up, U-M will look to take the Big Bear Trophy for the third straight year when it travels to East Lansing to take on the Michigan State Spartans on Sunday (Sept. 18) at noon from DeMartin Stadium. The match will be broadcast nationally via the Big Ten Network.
