ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team earned its second shutout victory of the season, holding Ole Miss scoreless in a 2-0 win on Friday (Sept. 2) at U-M Soccer Stadium. U-M has scored first in all five games this season and is now 3-1-1, including an unbeaten 3-0-1 record at home. Sophomore Reilly Martin had a hand in both goals to lead U-M with one goal and one assist, and senior/junior Ani Sarkisian added the other goal.
For the fifth time in as many games, the Wolverines got the scoring going first, striking in the 19th minute. Martin laid the ball off to Sarkisian at the top of the box, and Sarkisian took a touch and fired a hard left-footed shot into the left side of the goal before her defender could close on her.
In the 39th minute, a Michigan player was taken down in the box, and the Wolverines were awarded a penalty kick. Martin stepped to the spot and buried it into the lower right corner to give the Maize and Blue a 2-0 advantage at the half.
Michigan held an 8-4 advantage on shots in the first half, but the second half proved to be a different story. Ole Miss outshot U-M 15-2 in the final 45 minutes, keeping the Wolverines in their defensive end much of the half. Michigan's defense forced the Rebels to take many of their shots from outside the box, and junior/sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Jackson made six of her career-high nine saves in the second half to complete the shutout. The shutout is Jackson's fourth of her career and second of the season.
Sarkisian has tallied at least on point in all five games this season, scoring goals in four of them. She now leads the team and is second in the Big Ten with 10 points, on four goals and two assists. Martin is right behind her with eight points, including a conference-leading four assists, and two goals. She is just one assist shy of her total production from the 2015 season.
