ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team dropped its home opener to the Columbia Lions, 1-0, Friday (Sept. 2) at U-M Soccer Stadium. U-M controlled the major of quality chances, but Columbia put up a marker against the run of play in the 63rd minute that proved to be the difference.

The Wolverines generated multiple chances in the opening half, highlighted by a number of opportunities in the middle to late portion of the half. Sophomores Robbie Mertz and Marcello Borges and junior Michael Kapitula were the responsible parties, while Kapitula had perhaps the best effort in the 30th minute as he linked-up with Borges with a 1-2 sequence that resulted in Kapitula ripping a shot from 14-yards out that was turned away by Columbia goalkeeper Zach Adler.
Columbia found its breakthrough against the run of play in the 63rd minute, as Dylan Mott found space on the right flank and whipped a ball with his right foot to the top of the six. Striker Arthur Bosua then finished right with a side volley.
Chasing a goal with time left, U-M continued to find chances, with the best coming in the 79th minute from senior Yamann Sahlool. The biopsychology, cognition and neuroscience major broke free at the top right portion of the box with a good angle, but his strike was tipped out for a corner.
U-M's final chance of the night came with less than 10 seconds left, as junior goalkeeper Evan Louro pushed forward inside the box on a set piece from midfield. Louro collected the loose ball off a service from classmate Billy Stevens, but his volley from the top of the box went just high as time ran out.
Michigan continues its opening Labor Day homestand on Monday (Sept. 5) at 1 p.m. vs. the Yale Bulldogs. Fans can visit MGoBlue.com for tickets.
