NORMAN, Okla. -- The eighth-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team (400.800) picked up a solid team road score but was defeated by the nation's No. 1 squad in the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday (Jan. 28) at Oklahoma's McCasland Field House.
The Wolverines (3-3) began the matchup against the top-ranked Sooners on pommel horse and were paced by sophomore Samuel Su, who placed third on the event with a 13.85. Coupled with Su's performance, freshman Mitchell Brown (13.05) was solid in his second collegiate meet, as the squad totaled a 64.450 on the first event of the night. However, U-M trailed by 6.300 points as Oklahoma scored a 70.750 on floor exercise and chased the powerhouse Sooners the rest of the night.
On floor, a quartet of Wolverines surpassed the 14 plateau, led by sophomore Emyre Cole, who took second with a 14.75 on the event behind reigning NCAA champion Yul Mouldauer (14.85). Additionally, senior Anthony Stefanelli (14.05) and junior/sophomore Marty Strech and sophomore Anthony McCallum (14.00) all broke the plateau as the Wolverines marked an even 70.000 on the exercise as a team.
On vault, Cole continued his standout night with a 15.00 on his Yurchenko 2.5 to tie for the event title, the third of his young U-M career, while Strech earned a 14.20. Overall, the Wolverines compiled a new season high of 70.950 as a team.
After a team score of 65.400 on still rings that was paced by sophomore Ryan Dunning's 14.35, the Wolverines struggled to a 64.900 on high bar. Cole marked a 13.50 on the apparatus, while senior Adam Dean chipped in a 13.45 to represent the pair of Wolverines that went 13-plus.
The Maize and Blue closed out the night on a relative high note, turning in a new season high on parallel bars. Senior Dmitri Belanovski and Strech scored identical 13.70s that led the charge for the Wolverines.
Following the Windy City and tonight's non-conference matchup vs. the Sooners, the Wolverines next travel to take on No. 6 Ohio State on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 4 p.m. from St. John Arena in Columbus.
