EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Despite outshooting the Spartans, 32-10, the University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped a close 2-1 match to in-state rival Michigan State on Sunday (Oct. 15) at DeMartin Stadium.
The match, which was originally scheduled to be played yesterday (Saturday, Oct. 14), was postponed to today due to inclement weather, however, today's conditions still featured periods of heavy rain and a wet playing surface.
The Wolverines came out pressuring and controlled possession in their half of the field for the majority of the first half. U-M had five shots in the first five minutes of play and its sixth shot of the game resulted in a goal. Freshman Nicki Hernandez played the ball ahead to junior Reilly Martin, whose shot squeaked inside the right post to put the Maize and Blue up, 1-0, just 5:17 into the match. Martin's goal was her fifth of the season and leads the way for Michigan in that column.
The Spartans evened the game just over three minutes later as MSU's Lexy Warner stretched out her right leg just enough a poke a loose ball inside the six-yard box into the goal at 8:27.
Michigan continued to pressure, outshooting Michigan State, 15-4, in the first half, but the game remained tied at 1 at the break.
U-M goalkeeper senior Sarah Jackson played all 90 minutes and finished with three saves.
Hernandez had a highlight-reel shot attempt in the 48th minute, as she attempted a bicycle kick off a short-corner serve from Martin, but it went wide of the right post.
In the 59th minute, Michigan State's Kristelle Yewah headed in a cross from the right to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead.
The Wolverines created several chances late in the game, but MSU goalkeeper Reilley Ott made six of her 11 saves in the second half to preserve the win for the Spartans.
The loss marked U-M's third in a row and gives the Maize and Blue a conference record of 2-4-3. The last time the Wolverines dropped three straight matches was the last three games of the 2011 season.
Following a three-game road trip, Michigan will return home to host Illinois in its regular-season home finale next Saturday (Oct. 21) at 7:30 p.m. The match is U-M's Senior Day and all seven of its seniors will be honored in a special pregame ceremony.
