
Wolverines Use Fast Start to Blank Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team clinched a top-four seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament with a 2-0 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday (Oct. 21) at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Michigan (9-4-2, 5-1-1 B1G) got off to a fast start, taking a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of action. Sophomore Jack Hallahan, who featured as a danger man the entirety of the match, made his made his presence known early on. Hallahan took a small ball from junior Ivo Cerda at the top right of the box and then whipped a ball into the mixer that slid by the Ohio State goalkeeper to give U-M the early advantage.
» The win clinches U-M a top-four seed and home match in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 5 at U-M Soccer Stadium.
» For the fourth time on the season, sophomore Jack Hallahan notched a goal as well as an assist. He now leads the squad in helpers with six, while freshman Mohammed Zakyi has at least one point in six of the last seven matches.
» U-M improves to 5-1-1 in Big Ten play on the season. The five victories are the most in Big Ten action for U-M since the 2003 campaign.
The Maize & Blue doubled its pleasure in the 34th minute, as Hallahan was at it again. This time, he was on the helping end as he sent a similar ball in from the previous goal inside the six. The service found a streaking freshman Mohammed Zakyi inside the six, who finished in close to make it 2-0.
With the 2-0 lead heading into the second stanza, U-M refused to let up, outshooting the Buckeyes, 8-2, in the half and limiting any sort of a threat.
Freshman goalkeeper Henry Mashburn did not register a save on the night, but influenced several Buckeye efforts en route to earning his first clean sheet in his second collegiate match. Junior Marcello Borges also returned to the lineup, marking the 11th lineup variation head coach Chaka Daley has deployed on the campaign.

U-M returns home to host the Detroit-Mercy Titans on Wednesday (Oct. 25) at 7:30 p.m. The Wolverines will honor a trio of seniors in Tristan Jacob, Billy Stevens and Ali Jawad.
