STATE COLLEGE, Pa. --The University of Michigan women's soccer team was held scoreless as No. 14 Penn State snapped the Wolverines' five-game unbeaten streak with a 2-0 win Friday night (Oct. 6) at Jeffrey Field. Michigan moved to 2-2-3 in Big Ten play with four conference games remaining.
Penn State got on the board early in the 12th minute. Michigan freshman goalkeeper Hillary Beall came out strong to punch away PSU's initial shot, but the ball was served back into the box and Brittany Basinger got a foot on it just outside the top of the six-yard box to direct it into the bottom right corner of the goal.
Minutes later, Michigan got its best chance of the first half as fifth-year senior Ani Sarkisian's attempt from 20 yards out hit the left post and was cleared away.
Penn State held a 10-4 advantage in shots after the first 45 minutes and held a 1-0 lead.
Michigan owned possession early in the second half, creating several chances. Just over two minutes into the half, senior/junior Taylor Timko spotted up from the top of the box, and her weighted shot sailed just over the crossbar. Following two quick Wolverine corner kicks, freshman Sarah Stratigakis flicked a header on frame off a long throw from sophomore Jada Dayne, but it was tipped over the crossbar by PSU goalkeeper Rose Chandler.
U-M earned all seven of its second-half corner kicks in a five-minute span but was not able to capitalize.
The Nittany Lions put the game out of reach in the 76th minute on a goal from Megan Schafer.
Overall, Penn State held a 17-6 advantage in shots, while Michigan had the 8-6 edge in corner kicks, including seven in a short spurt in the second half. Beall played all 90 minutes in goal for Michigan and finished with five saves.
Two Wolverines -- freshman Alia Martin and junior Abby Kastroll -- returned to the Michigan lineup in tonight's match after missing several games due to injury, giving U-M more depth on the pitch.
Michigan will now travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on the 17th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday (Oct. 8) at noon. The match will be broadcast nationally on BTN and streamed online via BTN2Go (cable subscription required).
