ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Jack Hallahan scored two first-half goals but it wasn't enough, as the No. 13-seed University of Michigan men's soccer team saw its magical season end with a 3-2 defeat to Colgate in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday (Nov. 19) at U-M Soccer Stadium. Colgate's Aram Ouligian headed in the go-ahead goal off a corner kick with 2:47 left in the match.
The Wolverines (12-6-2) came out flying, as Hallahan scored just 1:14 into the match. Junior Robbie Mertz played a ball out to junior Francis Atuahene, who made a great run down the far flank. He fired a ball into the box that Colgate goalkeeper Jacob Harris spilled right to Hallahan, who finished cleanly at the back post.
Hallahan got his brace just seven minutes later. On a ball from junior Marcello Borges, Atuahene put a ball on the ground right on the six-yard box, but it was not cleared by the Colgate defense. It came to Hallahan, who brought it down with his left, took a touch and fired a shot into the far corner past a frozen Harris to give Michigan a 2-0 lead,
Colgate (12-10-1) responded to even up the score at 2 before halftime on goals from Ryan Bellavance and Uyiosa Omorogbe.
Michigan's best chance in the second half came from Atuahene. Freshman Umar Farouk Osman played a beautiful ball to the speedy Atuahene, who found himself in a one-on-one breakaway with Harris, but his attempt off the right foot went high over the bar.
After Ouligian scored, the Wolverines had one final chance on a free kick in Colgate territory with 34 seconds left, but the service in from freshman Marc Ybarra was cleared away, ending the threat.
The Wolverines finish the season with a 12-6-2 record having won the program's first Big Ten championship and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012.
