BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team lost each of the first five matches and could not shake off the sluggish start, falling to No. 10 Lehigh, 27-8, on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 19) at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
The Wolverines dropped a pair of swing bouts early and marquee matches late and never gained their footing in the dual. Junior/sophomore Logan Massa and graduate student Adam Coon provided the only wins for the Wolverines, defeating ranked opponents at 165 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.
Massa, ranked third nationally at 165 pounds, cruised to an 18-2 technical fall against 18th-ranked Cole Walter out of the intermission break to temporarily put the Wolverines back on track. He scored five takedowns in the contest, including three in the opening period, and added six back points off a pair of tilts in the second, including a two-pointer to end the match at the 4:56 mark. Massa improved to 6-0 on the season with his fifth bonus win.
Coon, ranked second at heavyweight, was the aggressor throughout his 6-2 win against No. 13 Jordan Wood in the final bout, but after falling to finish on several single-leg shots in the first and second periods, used a pair of counter takedowns in the third to seal his decision. Like Massa, Coon is undefeated on the season with a 5-0 mark and four bonus wins.
Lehigh used late takedowns -- both in the final 25 seconds -- to claim back-to-back marquee matches at the upperweights, as ninth-ranked Jordan Kutler rallied past fourth-ranked junior/sophomore Myles Amine, 5-4, at 174 pounds and sixth-ranked Ryan Preisch edged fifth-ranked fifth-year senior Domenic Abounader, 3-1, at 184 pounds. The Mountain Hawks also scored an upset win at 157 pounds, as Ian Brown used a six-point pancake in the first period to defeat eighth-ranked senior/junior Alec Pantaleo, 7-5.
Two Wolverines made their varsity debut to start the dual meet, including freshman Drew Mattin, who came out of redshirt and dropped a 7-0 decision to fourth-ranked and defending NCAA champion Darian Cruz at 125 pounds -- with nearly all of Cruz's points coming in the first period. Junior/sophomore Mike Volyanyuk made his dual debut at 133 pounds, wrestling third-ranked Scott Parker in place of second-ranked junior/sophomore Stevan Micic, who was out with a slight injury.
Michigan will take a week off over the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action at the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, slated for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1-2, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Action is scheduled to being at 9 a.m. PST each day.
