ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team fell to No. 15-ranked Ohio State, 3-1, Friday night (Nov. 24) at Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena.
Michigan got on the board first 11:18 into the opening period when senior defenseman Sam Piazza received a cross-ice pass on the point from junior defenseman Joseph Cecconi and then proceeded to fire the puck in front of a crowded Ohio State net for his first goal of the season.
The Buckeyes evened the score at one apiece a minute into the second stanza when Tanner Laczysnki found Freddy Gerard in the slot for a one-timer.
Ohio State went on to add two goals in less than a minute of each other in the third period to earn its sixth road victory of the season. OSU took the lead off the power play at the 7:24 mark on a John Wiitala shot from the point, then added to its lead at 8:32 from Gerard off a U-M turnover for his second of the night.
Sophomore forward Adam Winborg nearly found the back of the net with 1:40 remaining in the contest, getting a breakaway opportunity that rang off the crossbar.
Michigan did find the back of the net once more with 16 seconds on the clock when, with sophomore goaltender Hayden Lavigne pulled for an extra attacker, freshman forward Josh Norris jammed in the loose puck off a Hughes shot, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Lavigne recorded 33 saves between the pipes. With an assist on Piazza's, senior forward Tony Calderone extended his point streak to a team-leading five games, registering eight points (6G, 2A) over that span.
The series, which dates back to 1964, now stands at 81-39-13 overall against the Buckeyes in favor of Michigan.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow night (Saturday, Nov. 25) at Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena to conclude the weekend series. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
