Michigan Drops Heartbreaker to Ferris State in OT

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan ice hockey team settled for a weekend split after a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss against Ferris State Friday night (Nov. 3) at Red Berenson Rink at Yost Arena.
The Wolverines got off to a quick start on a goal from junior Cooper Marody at the 2:52 mark in the first period, with junior Joseph Cecconi and senior Sam Piazza recording assists on the play. With that goal Marody recorded his third of the season and goes into next week with a four-game point streak with 11 (3G, 8A) in his last four games. Ferris State answered shortly thereafter (8:39 mark) by a goal from Coale Norris, evening the score at 1.
Michigan came out strong in the second period, recording 11 shots on net, but struggled to bury the puck during the power play opportunity at the 10:07 mark. Despite many scoring chances, neither team was able to put a goal on the board during the period and went into their locker rooms still tied at one apiece.
Michigan went up in the third period scoring its second man-up goal of the evening by Dexter Dancs off a beautiful pass from Marody at the 7:00 mark. However, just under five minutes later (11:56 mark), Ferris State evened the score off the stick of Mitch Maloney.
Early in the overtime play, Michigan's goal was called back, allowing play to keep going. Shortly thereafter (2:25 mark), Ryker Killins scored the game-winner for the Bulldogs to seal the comeback win for the visitors.
Sophomore goaltender Hayden Lavigne recorded 20 saves for the Wolverines in net.
The Maize and Blue controlled the puck throughout the game, finishing with 44 shots compared to the visitors' 23.
The Wolverines fall to 71-31-4 overall and 44-11-2 at home against their former CCHA foe.
The Maize and Blue will stay in Ann Arbor next weekend for the Big Ten home-opening series with Minnesota (Nov. 10-11). Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. for both contests. The Wolverines went 1-3 against the Golden Gophers last season, bringing Michigan's record in the all-time series to 122-136-15. The Wolverines are 67-50-7 all-time against Minnesota at home, winning five of the last seven against the Gophers at home.
