Fall Academic All-Big Ten Selections Announced

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference office released its fall 2017 Academic All-Big Ten teams on Wednesday (Dec. 6), with a record 122 Michigan student-athletes earning recognition for their work in the classroom.
Criteria for making the Academic All-Big Ten team includes being in at least their second academic year at their institution and maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Big Ten Conference removed letterwinner criteria this year, opening the door for more eligible student-athletes.
The total for the fall of 2017 was 41 more than last year's total of 81. Michigan has seen a dramatic increase since 2009, almost tripling the total of 41 from that season. U-M has had an increase every year except one since 2009.
The breakdown of the 122 Michigan student-athletes on the list is nine from field hockey, 48 from football, 13 from men's cross country, 20 from women's cross country, 10 from men's soccer, 15 from women's soccer and seven from volleyball.
Michigan's total of 122 Academic All-Big Ten selections led the Big Ten. Penn State tallied the second most with 118 followed by Michigan State with 113.
The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the winter and spring seasons, and the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school.
