MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team fell, 5-2, to Wisconsin on Friday night (Feb. 17) in a Big Ten Conference matchup at the Kohl Center.
Despite early pressure by U-M in the Badgers' end of the ice, Wisconsin got on the scoreboard first to take an early 1-0 lead when Trent Frederic capitalized on a shot wide off the end boards by Jake Linhart.
One minute into the second period, Michigan scored on the power play for the fifth consecutive game with a one-timer by sophomore forward Cooper Marody on the back door off a feed from freshman forward Jake Slaker to even the score at one apiece.
Wisconsin regained the lead, 2-1, at the 7:54 mark of the second period when Cameron Hughes broke past the Michigan defense to convert on the power-play opportunity.
After creating multiple scoring opportunities a shift beforehand, senior forward Evan Allen was able to keep the momentum going and even the score at two apiece on a pass from freshman Adam Winborg in the slot for his third goal of the season.
The tie was short-lived, however, as Fredric tallied his second of the night off a turnover by the Wolverines in their zone to regain the hosts' lead, 3-2. Wisconsin went on to add two additional goals within a 20-second span to put the game out of reach.
Freshman goaltender Jack LaFontaine made 26 saves in net for the Wolverines in the losing effort.
Michigan will conclude the weekend series in Madison tomorrow night (Saturday, Feb. 18) against the Badgers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
