ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10 University of Michigan men's gymnastics team defeated the No. 8 California Golden Bears in its first home meet of the season, 402.100-386.800, on Saturday (Feb.25) at Cliff Keen Arena.
Sophomore Emyre Cole led the Wolverines with event titles on floor exercise (14.40) and vault (14.80). The titles served as his third vault win on the year and second on floor. Anthony McCallum (14.10) earned the victory on parallel bars, his first of the season, while classmate Uche Eke secured a 14.15 on horse for the first event title of his career. Sophomore Ryan Dunning also took home his first event title with a 14.50 on still rings.
As a team, the Wolverines we aided by new season bests on pommel horse with a 67.650 and still rings, outdistancing the previous high score on the season on rings by 2.9 points.
Cal got off to a slow start on the day as it struggled on pommel horse with a 58.400 in the first rotation, while the Wolverines marked a 67.800 on floor and never looked back, cruising to the home victory.
The Wolverines now embark on their annual spring break trip, traveling to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to compete against the Illinois Fighting Illini, Arizona State, and the Puerto Rican and Spanish National Team on Saturday (March 4) at 5:30 p.m. AST.
