BERKELEY, Calif. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team rallied for three straight points after dropping the doubles point but was unable to hold on to lead in 4-3 loss to No. 7 California on Tuesday evening (Feb. 28).
After failing to secure the doubles point for just the second time this season, Michigan was able to win three consecutive singles matches to take a 3-1 lead.
The Wolverines evened the score at one apiece with a 6-2, 6-3 victory by Carter Lin on court six. Michigan went on to gain two additional points with wins at No. 4 and No. 5 by Kevin Wong (3-6, 6-0, 6-2) and Runhao Hua (6-3, 7-5), respectively.
The hosts cut the deficit with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 triumph on court three and then evened the score at three apiece with a 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-2 win at No. 1.
After falling in the first set 3-6, Myles Schalet forced a third after a set-two tiebreaker, 7-6 (8), but ultimately was unable to seal the upset victory.
Up next, Michigan will wrap up its California trip with a neutral-site match against Oklahoma State on Thursday (March 2) in La Jolla.
