SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team used a second-round 277 (-11) to build a six-shot lead Saturday (March 4), while senior Reed Hrynewich has a three-shot advantage in the individual race with rounds of 68-66 after 36 holes of the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate at Desert Mountain's Outlaw Course.
"We really got off to a rocky start first thing in the morning, but I was proud of the guys for staying focused and bouncing back the way they did," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "By the time the afternoon round started, I think we had a very good feel for the course and some good momentum going."
Hrynewich had 10 birdies and two eagles in his two rounds to build the three-shot lead over Purdue's Fernando Barco and Alabama's Lee Hodges. The 66 in the second round is a career-best score for the senior lefty. Hrynewich eagled his first hole of the second round, the par-5 second hole, and then eagled the par-4 eighth hole, holing out a 60-degree wedge for the two after a 360-yard drive.
"Reed really led the way and he was due for a day like that," Whitten said. "I'm confident he'll keep it going tomorrow as well. We have a very good opportunity in front of us, and I'm excited to see what we can do."
Michigan was tied for fourth after 18 holes but rocketed up the leaderboard with four under-par rounds. Michigan leads Northwestern and Kansas by six shots and Purdue by 10 heading into tomorrow's final round.
