COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Contending with high winds throughout the afternoon, the University of Michigan men's track and field team posted solid efforts to conclude the final day of the Ohio State Jesse Owens Classic on Saturday (April 22), including a pair of top-10 performances, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Brennan Munley was the top finisher on the day for the Wolverines, crossing the line second overall at 800 meters in 1:49.83. Munley, who was an All-American last year on the indoor distance medley relay team, finished less than four-tenths of a second back of winner Jared Fleming of Ohio State.
Munley turned the final corner onto the straightaway in second place and looked to be closing in on Fleming, but he ran out of room even with the strong winds that howled down the straightaway all afternoon at his back.
In the second heat, Anthony Berry ran 1:52.60 to himself fall less than four-tenths of a second shy of the win, while Matt Plowman ran 1:54.31.
Contending with a robust 3.8m/s tailwind that is sometimes enough to throw off hurdling rhythm, Roland Amarteifio still managed to run near his career best in the event at 14.73 for 13th place in the event overall.
Amarteifio would not leave Columbus without a new career best, though, as he came back later in the day to win the second heat of the 400-meter hurdles in 54.26 and finished eighth overall. Through all four meets of his debut outdoor season, he has progressively run faster each time in this event, shaving nearly two-and-a-half seconds since his debut in late March.
At 400 meters, Desmond Melson clocked 49.58 to notch a seventh-place finish in the fastest-seeded heat of the day and 11th overall.
Stephen Hagen cracked the 11-second barrier at 100 meters for the second meet in a row and the third time this season, this time running a windy 10.92 (+4.7m/s tailwind).
Melson and Hagen finished back-to-back later in the day at 200 meters, taking second and third in the third heat in 22.16 and 22.18 (+4.7m/s).
Both Alex Klemm and Max Wagner finished just one height below the winning jumper in the high jump, as they cleared 1.98m (6-5.75). Klemm cleared that bar on his second attempt after needing all three tries at the opening bar, while Wagner cleared the opening height on his first go before making the next on his third leap.
Windy conditions also affected the pole vault, where Kevin Haughn and Nick Burkhalter made it over at 4.56m (14-11.5) to finish tied for seventh and 11th, respectively.
