Michigan Places 145 on Spring Academic All-Big Ten Team

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference office released its spring 2017 Academic All-Big Ten teams on Wednesday (May 31), with 145 University of Michigan student-athletes earning recognition for their work in the classroom.
U-M had 82 honorees in the fall and 63 in the winter, giving them 290 total in 2016-17. The overall total is 14 more than the 2015-16 academic year and an increase of 30 in a two-year span. The 145 spring selections are the most for the Wolverines since the Big Ten started the awards in 2009-10.
Criteria for making the Academic All-Big Ten team includes being a letterwinner in at least their second academic year at their institution and maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
The breakdown of the 145 Michigan student-athletes on the list includes six from baseball, four from men's golf, 14 from men's lacrosse, six from men's tennis, 16 from men's track and field, three from women's golf, 22 from women's lacrosse, 23 from rowing, 12 from softball, five from women's tennis, 25 from women's track and field and nine from water polo.
The Distinguished Scholar Award will be awarded at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school.
