ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team received today (Thursday, May 4) its third straight NCAA Regional bid and will travel to Sammamish, Washington, Monday through Wednesday, May 15-17, to compete in the regional site at the Aldarra Golf Club. Overall, U-M's postseason selection is the 40th overall in 99 seasons and 12th regional selection for the program.
"Our guys have worked really hard this year, and I'm proud of them for earning another postseason selection," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "It's an expectation for us to play at Regionals, and this is what we get ready for all year. Everyone in the postseason is 0-0 at this point, and we're looking forward to competing for the right to play in the national championship."
The Wolverines, who earned the No. 10 seed at the Washington Regional, begin their quest for the 2017 NCAA Championships with a practice round at 9 a.m. PDT on Sunday, May 14. The regional consists of 54 holes, with 18 holes being played each day beginning at 8 a.m. PDT.
The five other regional sites are University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, hosted by LSU; The Grove in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, hosted by Middle Tennessee; Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Indiana, hosted by Purdue; Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, California, hosted by Stanford and UT Golf Club in Austin, Texas, hosted by Texas.
From each regional, the top five teams and top low individual not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Finals, to be held Friday through Wednesday, May 26-31, at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
The 2017 finals format will consist of three days (54 holes) of stroke play for all competitors, Friday through Sunday (May 26-28). Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play Monday (May 29) to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the 72-hole stroke-play individual champion. After Monday, the top eight teams advance to match play for the team championship.
Michigan has posted seven top-five finishes in its 12 regular-season events, winning two team titles -- at the Dayton Flyer Invitational (Oct. 17-18) and the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (March 4-5). U-M finished ninth at the Big Ten Championships (April 28-30).
Currently, the Wolverines are averaging 290.71 per team round and set the program's single-round team record with a 270 (-14) in the final round at Inverness Intercollegiate (Sept. 19-20), breaking the U-M mark by two shots and tournament's single-round record by seven.
Individually, Michigan has collected four individual titles as sophomore Nick Carlson won the Inverness Intercollegiate in a playoff, junior All-Big Ten first team selection Kyle Mueller won the first of his two titles at the Windon Memorial Classic (Sept. 25-26) while adding his third career at the weather shortened Aggie Invitational (April 1-2). Junior Ian Kim add a fourth title after he defeated Carlson in a playoff for the Dayton Flyer Invitational medalist honor.
The NCAA regional selection marks U-M's 40th NCAA postseason appearance and the program's 10th team regional since the format changed to regional play in 1989. Overall, U-M has advanced to 22 NCAA Finals appearances winning back-to-back national titles in 1934 and 1935.
