While the collegiate track and field season ended earlier this month at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, several current University of Michigan standouts -- as well as former and future Wolverines -- will continue to test their mettle against the nation's best at the USATF Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, California, this Thursday through Sunday (June 22-25).
Four-time NCAA national runner-up distance star Erin Finn and first-team All-America decathlete Steven Bastien will represent the Wolverines at the USATF Championships, while up-and-coming Wolverines Roland Amarteifio, Jacob Branch, Isaac Harding, Courtney Jacobsen and Meagan Malloy will compete at the USATF Junior Championships (U20).
Current volunteer assistant coaches Amanda Eccleston and Mason Ferlic will also compete at the championships, as will former Wolverine stars Jeff Porter and Shannon Osika.
Joining U-M's Junior Championships crew will be incoming Wolverine recruit Camille Davre, who will compete for Michigan beginning this upcoming fall.
Those competing at the senior championships -- Bastien, Finn, Eccleston, Ferlic, Porter and Osika -- will be shooting for top-three finishes in their respective events, which would qualify them as members of Team USA for next month's IAAF World Championships in London.
Finn, who did not compete during the outdoor season after earning national runner-up honors during both the cross country and indoor seasons, will compete in the 10,000 meters on Thursday night. She qualified for the meet by virtue of her 31:51.84 clocking while competing unattached a year ago. In her only competition so far this season, she helped pace teammate Madeline Trevisan to a career-best 34:09.55 in the Speed River Inferno 10,000-meter race.
Bastien is back in action just two weeks after becoming the 56th collegian to break the 8,000-point barrier in the decathlon, finishing fourth at NCAAs with 8,015 points. Thursday and Friday will mark the final time Bastien, who has exhausted his college eligibility, dons the Maize and Blue in his illustrious career.
Jacobsen leads the Wolverines' rising freshmen competing in Sacramento after finishing eighth in the hammer throw at the Big Ten Championships and competing at the NCAA East Preliminaries. She will be joined by Meagan Malloy in the hammer throw.
Harding has already represented Team USA this year as a member of the World Junior Cross Country Championships squad, and he will run on the track this Friday alongside teammate Branch at 5,000 meters.
Amarteifio will contest both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles on Friday and potentially into Saturday.
Incoming freshman Davre will perform on her biggest stage since she committed to join the Michigan track and field family earlier this academic year. Davre, a 10-time Wisconsin state champion in track during her high school career, will compete at 1,500 meters in the Junior Championships.
Professionals Eccleston and Osika, who both train under women's distance coach Mike McGuire, will go for World Championships bids at 1,500 meters. Ferlic will do the same in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as will two-time Olympian Porter in the 110-meter hurdles.
