Throughout the offseason and heading into the 2017 season, the Wolverines will give fans an inside look at the Michigan volleyball program with the At the Net blogs. This week, freshman Ellie Brooks discusses her summer in California, an internship at a law firm, and a trip to Oregon.
Hi Everyone!
There are officially four more weeks until I am back in Ann Arbor, and I am super excited! The idea of starting a new season has been so exhilarating to think about, but the time I've been able to spend in California, at home, has been great. Being able to enjoy the sun and warm air, the tranquil scenery of Altadena, and the vibrancy and energy of Los Angeles has been much needed. Even though I miss the girls and my friends from Michigan A LOT, the separation has been eased a little by phone calls and face-timing and being able to reconnect with friends back home, and gaining experience in the working world has been fantastic.
I've been working at a law firm in Pasadena called DeWitt Algorri & Algorri. They are a personal injury firm so I have been able to help a lot in finding medical records, filing requests, sending out faxes and deposition requests, and of course helping to organize files. The experience has been great not only because the people I work with are super cool and passionate about the work they do, but also because I have been able to observe the process and interactions between the firm and their clients, cases, and each other, which has fortified my desire and interest to go into the field of law -- a dream of mine since the 6th grade. Even though the firm can deal with some pretty serious cases, the atmosphere around the office is very lighthearted and day-to-day there are always laughs or fun stories being shared. It really is a great opportunity that I am so thankful to have.
This week I will be in Oregon celebrating my eldest cousin's graduation from the University of Oregon's School of Architecture, which means I'll have four days filled with family, fun, and felicitations. I am so excited to see all my family, especially my cousins, who are like siblings to me. We haven't seen each other in about a year so there will be a lot of catching up to do, but hopefully because of our face-time calls during the year, we will also have plenty of time to just enjoy each other's company.
While it has been hard to be away from the team, (especially since Michigan has been so nice and warm)! I have continued to make sure I am ready to get back to campus for season and camps by making sure to visit the weight room, do conditioning on the beach, throughout my neighborhood, and on the field, and touching a ball! I cannot wait to get back to Ann Arbor and see all the girls from the team and friends back in AA, move into my house that I will share with three other girls on the team (Sydney, Savannah and Rocky), and welcome my two cousins who will also be attending Michigan in the coming fall, one of which I will live with as well!
July 19 is coming faster than I expected, but I'm excited for what's to come and hope to enjoy and appreciate the rest of the time I will have in beautiful California. I cannot wait to see everyone in the coming season and remember there's no better thing to do than GO BLUE!
Sincerely,
