ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fifth-year senior Ani Sarkisian scored the game's only goal in the 83rd minute to lift the 23rd-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team past Toledo, 1-0, on Sunday (Aug. 27) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines remain unbeaten at 3-0-1 through the first four games.
With the win, head coach Greg Ryan recorded his 100th career win at Michigan (100-58-31) and his 285th overall as a Division I head coach (285-139-49).
"I am so happy to have 100 wins at Michigan -- it is very meaningful for me," said Ryan. "I remember the early days were rough for us, but we just stayed the course. Our goals was to have good people who came and worked together and got along well and gave their best for Michigan. We have done that. I have a wonderful group of kids to coach and I would not want to be anywhere else."
The shutout was U-M's third of the season, and the Wolverines have allowed just one goal through four games.
"I am so happy with our defense," Ryan added. "They continue to grow every time they step on the field. The pressure in the second half was just relentless and they never really gave Toledo much of a sniff. They are not being lucky -- they are organized, they are tough, and they are hard to break down."
Michigan dominated the stat sheet in the first half, outshooting Toledo 15-4 and holding a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks, but the game remained scoreless through the first 45 minutes.
The Wolverines had several close calls in the second half, nearly scoring on several plays, but shots went high and wide of the goal, a shot was tipped into the crossbar, and Toledo goalkeeper Madison Perrin made four saves in the second half.
In the 83rd minute, Michigan finally broke through, as junior Reilly Martin served a lofty cross from the left and Sarkisian ran on and headed it into the bottom left corner of the goal to give the captain her first tally of the season.
"I was so proud of the kids," Ryan comments about his team's efforts. "We were on the front foot from the beginning of the game and we went after them for 90 minutes. It took what it took and I think we could have had 10 along the way, but a great finish by Ani for the win. In games like this, it is just about finding ways to win because these games can go the other direction. Ani, our senior captain, stepped up and found a way to put it in."
Overall, Michigan outshot Toledo 29-8 and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior Megan Hinz started in goal and made one save in the first half, and then freshman Hillary Beall came on in the second half and made two saves to preserve the shutout.
