ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team (3-1-3) wrapped up its 2017 non-conference schedule by holding No. 17 Wake Forest (6-1-1) scoreless en route to a 0-0 draw on Sunday (Sept. 10) at U-M Soccer Stadium. It marked U-M's third overtime match in its last five outings, all of which have ended in a tie, as the Wolverines wrapped up non-conference play with a 3-1-3 mark.
With today's shutout of the Demon Deacons, Michigan completed its non-conference home slate without allowing a single, recording four shutouts.
Today also marked the women's soccer program's second annual Military Appreciation Day to honor active duty and veterans of our armed forces and their families. Several Wolverines have family members that have served in the military and are grateful for the service of all members of our armed forces. Throughout the game, select Wolverines shared their personal stories and thanked active duty and veterans with special messages on the video boards.
Wake Forest outshot Michigan 9-4 in the first half, with all four of WFU's shots on goal being stopped by freshman goalkeeper Hillary Beall, who earned the start in goal. Senior Sarah Jackson took over in goal at the start of the second half.
The Wolverines produced a flurry of dangerous chances late in the second half with the best coming in the 77th minute following a U-M corner kick. The rebound bounced to sophomore Brooke Cilley and she blasted a shot from the top of the box that hit the cross bar. A minute later, senior/junior Taylor Timko got a breakaway chance that was tipped over the bar by Wake Forest goalkeeper Lindsay Preston, and then junior Reilly Martin pushed a shot just high that skimmed the top of the cross bar.
The Maize and Blue defense did not allow a single shot on goal in the second half, but several Wake Forest chances went just wide or hit the post, making it an action-pack second half.
Early in the first overtime period, Wake Forest nearly netted the golden goal as a header went just wide of the right post. Toward the end of that overtime period, Jackson came off her line and elevated to intercept a long WFU serve into the six-yard box. After 110 minutes, the match ended in a stalemate as neither team could manage the game winner.
It marked the first time Michigan played to a 0-0 draw since Oct. 16, 2016, against Minnesota.
Michigan will now begin Big Ten Conference play when it hosts Purdue on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. To purchase individual or group tickets or learn more about women's soccer tickets, visit the women's soccer ticket page.
