ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A sellout crowd of 2,637 fans witnessed the University of Michigan men's soccer team fall to in-state rival Michigan State, 1-0, in overtime on Sunday (Sept. 17) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines, playing down a man for the last 16 minutes of regulation plus overtime, eventually succumbed to the Spartans in the final moments of the first extra session.
The teams traded shots in a scoreless first half. Despite their lowest first-half shot tally of the season, the Wolverines (4-1-2, 1-1-1 B1G) outshot the Spartans, 3-2, featuring shots from junior Ivo Cerda, sophomore Jack Hallahan and freshman Mohammed Zakyi.
A turning point occurred midway through the second half, as senior captain Billy Stevens was sent off via a red card, forcing the Wolverines to play with 10 men for the final 26 minutes of match action.
The shorthanded Wolverines held up against the vaunted Spartan attack through the final 16 minutes of regulation and nearly 10 minutes of extra time. However, the Spartans (7-0-0, 2-0-0 B1G) eventually found the match winner with 31 ticks remaining in the first extra time, as DeJuan jones slotted in a ball inside the Spartan finishing third for the golden goal.
