ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind key goals from junior Reilly Martin and freshman Nicki Hernandez, the University of Michigan women's soccer tallied its first Big Ten win of the season, defeating Indiana, 2-1, on Sunday (Sept. 17) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The victory came in front of 995 fans, the women's soccer team's largest crowd at U-M Soccer Stadium this season. Today's match was part of U-M's first Futbol and Food Tracks event that featured a doubleheader with the men's soccer team and several food trucks from local Ann Arbor vendors that were a big hit with the fans.
For the sixth time in nine matches, the Wolverines got on the board first.
Martin, who was Michigan's leading point-getter in the 2016 season, registered her first goal of the season in the 22nd minute, as junior/sophomore Katie Foug slotted a ball into the box and Martin turned her defender and tucked the ball into the right corner just before another Hoosier defender could collapse on her.
Less than four minutes later, the Wolverines pushed their lead to two goals. Fifth-year senior Ani Sarkisian got the ball 35 yards out on the left flank and chipped a ball into the middle of the box for Hernandez to run onto. In a challenge with Indiana goalkeeper Bethany Kopel, Hernandez jumped and got the first touch to push the ball past Kopel, and Hernandez finished on an open net, giving the freshman her first goal in maize and blue.
With just over five minutes to go in the opening half, the Hoosiers capitalized on a set piece, as Chandra Davidson headed in a corner kick from Caroline Dreher.
The Hoosiers held a 14-9 advantage in shots in the first half, but U-M had the edge in the score column at the break, 2-1.
With the teams battling heat in the mid-80s, the shot count was lower for both teams in the second half, with Michigan holding a 7-3 advantage.
U-M's best chance in the second half came in the 77th minute when freshman Samantha DeVecchi's initial shot from deep was bobbled by Kopel, but the IU keeper dove on it just before fellow freshman Sarah Stratigakis could punch it in.
Freshman goalkeeper Hillary Beall played all 90 minutes for the Wolverines and finished with a career-high seven saves, including five in the second half.
After finishing its Big Ten-opening weekend with a 1-1 record, Michigan will now hit the road and head west for a conference matchup with Minnesota on Thursday (Sept. 21) at 6 p.m. CDT. The game will be streamed live on BTN2Go.
