COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 17 University of Michigan ice hockey team fell to No. 6-ranked Ohio State, 4-0, Friday night (Jan. 26) at Value City Arena. The loss brought an end to the Wolverines' four-game win streak.
The first period was a mostly defensive affair, with the game scoreless until Ohio State broke through with 3:20 remaining in the opening frame. Kevin Miller received a long stretch pass from Dakota Joshua, who led a two-on-one for the Buckeyes. Miller took the puck down near the top of the circle and fired one into the back of the net, which gave Ohio State a 1-0 lead. Tommy Parran also picked up an assist on the goal.
Michigan's best scoring opportunity in the early going came a minute into the second period during a sequence while playing four-on-four. Junior forward Cooper Marody took a shot from the slot that drew the Buckeye goaltender out of his net. On the ensuing rebound, senior captain Tony Calderone was unable to slide the puck into the open net past the sprawling netminder.
Just as it was in the first period, the second period went by without much offensive action until Ohio State scored on the power play with 1:24 remaining in the second stanza. The Buckeyes were cycling the puck low in the zone when Mason Jobst passed it over to Matthew Weiss. Weiss found Tanner Laczynski in the slot, and he rifled the puck into the Wolverine net to double the Buckeyes' lead.
Ohio State continued to find ways to score early in the third period when Jobst scored on a breakaway to make it 3-0, 3:28 into the third period. Matt Miller found Jobst behind the Michigan defense, and he made a nice move on net for the breakaway goal.
Ohio State struck again on the power play 8:53 into the final period when Joshua tipped a shot from the point into the Wolverine net. The Buckeyes worked the puck at the blue line between Gordi Meyer and Matt Miller, who fired the puck into a crowd, and Joshua got his stick on it to deflect it into the back of the Michigan goal. Ohio State extended its lead to 4-0, which ended the scoring for the game.
Despite outshooting the Buckeyes, 32-20, the Maize and Blue was unable to put one past Ohio State goaltender Sean Romeo and the Buckeye defense. The shutout was Romeo's second of the season. This marked the sixth time this season the Wolverines outshot their opponent but were unable to come away with the victory.
Michigan will close out the weekend series with Ohio State on Saturday (Jan. 27) at 8 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio.
