ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Jack Hallahan tallied four points and was one of five players to score a goal as the No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team got back in the win column with a resounding 5-0 win over Detroit Mercy on a rainy Wednesday night (Oct. 10) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore Marc Ybarra (38th minute, PK), sophomore Umar Farouk Osman (43'), Noah Kleedtke (72') Jackson Ragen (75') and Hallahan (87') provided the scoring in the five-goal effort, the program's highest output since a 5-1 win over Oakland on Oct. 25, 2016. Hallahan added two assists to the scoresheet, while Ragen, freshman Sosa Emovon and sophomore Carlos Tellez all had helpers of their own.
Defensively, Michigan did not give Detroit Mercy anything, holding the Titans to one shot on the evening. Sophomore Henry Mashburn played all 90 minutes in goal, earning the clean sheet.
The Wolverines dominated possession from the opening minute, as Detroit Mercy chose to keep numbers in its own half. In the 11th minute, Hallahan shot from distance, but it took a deflection on the way in off a Titans defender, with only a backpedaling save from goalkeeper Devin Mendez keeping it out of the net. On the ensuing corner, Hallahan whipped a service in and found Mukuna, but his header went high over the bar.
For the second Wednesday in a row, Ybarra opened the scoring from the spot, converting the penalty kick after a Detroit Mercy defender was whistled for a hand ball in the box.
Osman added to the lead five minutes later. Borges sent a cross into the box that was cleared away to freshman Sosa Emovon at the top of the box. His follow-up shot cued right to Osman, who slotted it lower left past Mendez to give Michigan the 2-0 lead.
The first 25 minutes of second half did not see any chances for either team until Kleedtke made it 3-0 at the 72:00 mark. Off a Detroit Mercy corner kick, Ragen headed the ball clear of the box to Hallahan, who sprinted free up the field. As the Titans frantically tracked back, Kleedtke ran unmarked parallel to Hallahan. The Englishman drew two defenders and passed it to a wide-open Kleedtke, who tucked his shot to the far post past new Detroit Mercy goalkeeper Evan Mazurek.
Nearly three minutes later, Ragen made it 4-0, heading in a corner kick from Hallahan.
The Wolverines nearly added to that in the minutes that followed; Hallahan broke clear again down the right flank and had a one-on-one with Mazurek, but pushed it wide of the post. Then freshman Kevin Buca brilliantly dummied a Titans defender and unleashed a shot from the edge of the box that bounced off the crossbar and ricocheted out.
Hallahan capped the scoring at 5-0 in the 87th minute. Tellez shielded several Detroit Mercy defenders at the top of the box and won the ball out of the air before slipping Hallahan in behind. He dribbled around Sami Nouri -- the third Titans goalkeeper of the night -- and chipped it cleanly into the net.
The Wolverines will return to the field in six days, hosting Notre Dame on Tuesday (Oct. 16) at U-M Soccer Stadium. First touch is slated for 6 p.m. The match will be televised live on the Big Ten Network and streamed live via the BTN2Go app.
