ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team completed the weekend sweep of St. Lawrence with a 3-1 victory on Saturday night (Oct. 27) at Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena.
"Good effort tonight," said head coach Mel Pearson. "We were ready to play and came out and dictated the tempo and were able to get an early goal."
The Wolverines got on the board in the first period when sophomore forward Josh Norris redirected a shot from classmate Quinn Hughes into the net for his third goal of the season, giving Michigan a 1-0 lead at the 5:52 mark. Michigan stayed on the attack, outshooting the Saints, 8-2, through the first 10 minutes of play.
Michigan went on the man-advantage when St. Lawrence was called for holding with just under eight minutes remaining in the period. It did not take long for senior defenseman Joseph Cecconi to find fellow defenseman Hughes, who put the puck into the net from the point for his second goal of the season, increasing the Wolverines lead to 2-0.
St. Lawrence cut into the Wolverines lead at the 5:09 mark of the second period to make it a one goal game. U-M had three power-play opportunities throughout the period but were unable to convert and extend its lead. The Wolverines stayed on the attack and pressured the Saints defense, outshooting them, 13-6, in the period.
Early in the third period, Michigan increased its lead when freshman forward Jack Olmstead poked in a rebound off of a Hughes shot, giving the Wolverines a 3-1 lead. The goal by Olmstead marked the first of his collegiate career.
Michigan held St. Lawrence to 19 shots on goal, while the Wolverines peppered the Saints net with 40 shots of their own.
"One of our main focuses coming into this weekend was cleaning up our defensive game," said Hughes. "I think we did a really good job with that this weekend and they (St. Lawrence) were a good team, so it's encouraging moving forward."
Freshman goaltender Strauss Mann held St. Lawrence to one goal en route to his first collegiate victory in his second start of the season. Mann faced 19 shots on goal and recorded 18 saves for a .947 save percentage.
"Strauss came in and did a real nice job tonight just like Hayden (Lavigne) did last night," Pearson said. "He made key saves at critical times."
Michigan will be on the road next weekend, Friday and Saturday (Nov. 2-3) as it travels to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to face off against Lake Superior State in a two-game series.
