ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team had its nine-match unbeaten streak stopped after a 1-0 loss to No. 2 Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 7) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Sunday's match featured the top two teams in the Big Ten standings and it lived up to its billing. In a physical affair -- the match featured 35 total fouls -- Indiana's Rece Buckmaster broke through to net the match's only goal in the 56th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Henry Mashburn had his best match of the season in the losing effort, making a season-high four saves. The Michigan defense of senior Daniel Mukuna, sophomore Austin Swiech, sophomore Jackson Ragen and senior Marcello Borges -- who returned to the lineup after a three-match absence -- did well to limit Indiana's scoring chances. The Hoosiers had 10 shots, their third-lowest total of the season.
Each team had good spells of possession in the first half. The only real chance for Indiana came in match's opening minutes on a free kick just outside of Michigan's area. Timmy Mehl hit the crossbar and the rebound was put into the net, but the would-be Indiana scorer was flagged offsides, negating the goal.
The Wolverines got their first shot in the 26th minute from Borges, who wheeled inside and put the ball on his right foot, but his attempt sailed over the bar. Six minutes later, Mashburn was called into action on an Indiana counter-attack, going down to his right to make a diving save on AJ Palazzolo. Mashburn made three of his four saves in the first half, as the teams were scoreless at the break.
The Hoosiers broke the scoring open in the 56th minute on a goal from Buckmaster, who found some space at the edge of the box and slotted one past Mashburn.
Down a goal, Michigan pressed forward looking for the equalizer. Off a corner, senior Robbie Mertz sent a ball into the box and found Mukuna. He created some separation from the defense and got his head on the ball, but his attempt went high. Four minutes later, off a Borges long throw-in, junior Jack Hallahan got the ball on his left foot inside the box, but his shot was blocked by an Indiana defender.
The team's last great scoring opportunity came in the 87th minute. Off a service into the box, Mukuna redirected the ball to Osman, but his header attempt went over, ending the threat.
Michigan will continue its homestand on Wednesday (Oct. 10), welcoming Detroit to U-M Soccer Stadium. First touch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and the match will be streamed live via BTN Plus (paid subscription required).
