Michigan Falls to No. 6 Notre Dame to Split Weekend Series

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team fell to No. 6-ranked Notre Dame, 6-2, on Saturday night (Nov. 10) in the finale of their weekend series at Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena.
The Wolverines opened the scoring early, when junior forward Will Lockwood sent the puck over the glove of Notre Dame goalie Dylan St. Cyr on the power play. Quinn Hughes and Joseph Cecconi tallied the assists on the goal at 2:47 of the first period.
Michigan appeared to a 2-0 lead when sophomore forward Josh Norris found the back of the net midway through the first period, but after review, the goal was nullified due to the play being ruled offside.
Notre Dame put two goals on the scoreboard late in the first period to take a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission. Alex Steeves tapped the puck in at 16:14 before Cal Burke netted a breakaway goal during four-on-four play at 17:51.
The Fighting Irish would carry the momentum into the second period and put the game out of reach with a four-goal effort and extend their lead to 6-1.
At 4:50 of the third period freshman defenseman Nick Blankenburg skated the puck through the slot and netted his first collegiate goal to cut the U-M deficit to 6-2. Norris and Jimmy Lambert were credited with assists.
"He's (Blankenburg) played well" said Michigan head coach Mel Pearson. "You can tell he's got some patience and poise."
Michigan held a 14-5 advantage in shots in the third period as a majority of the play was spent in the Wolverines' offensive zone.with the majority of play being in the U-M offensive zone.
Michigan will head to Penn State next Friday and Saturday (Nov. 16-17) to take on the Nittany Lions for the Wolverines' first Big Ten road series of the season. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday night at Pegula Ice Arena.
