WESTFIELD, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team saw its Big Ten Tournament run end Sunday (Nov. 11), falling to No. 2 Indiana, 3-0, in the tournament final at Grand Park.
Following the match, senior Robbie Mertz and sophomore Jackson Ragen were named to the all-tournament team.
The Hoosiers struck first, going up on a goal from Cory Thomas in the seventh minute. Sophomore Henry Mashburn did well to make saves on back-to-back attempts from Griffin Dorsey and Trevor Swartz, but the third attempt at the back post was tapped into the net despite the shouts for offsides.
The Wolverines got their first shot on goal in the 25th minute on a give-and-go between junior Lucas Rosendall and Mertz. An interlinking play between the two teams saw Rosendall in behind the defense, but his low shot to the near post was steered out by IU goalkeeper Trey Muse for a corner kick.
Indiana had a few set-piece opportunities in dangerous areas, but the Michigan defense held firm. In the 35th minute, IU's Spencer Glass tested Mashburn with a low shot from the right side, but the goalkeeper did well to go to the ground and save it.
Michigan had two chances in the final 10 minutes of the half, both courtesy of sophomore Mohammed Zakyi. In the 37th minute, Zakyi found himself open a few feet from Muse, but his header off a cross from junior Jack Hallahan went inches wide. Three minutes later, Zakyi got another opportunity, this time off a cross from senior Marcello Borges, but that header also went wide of the frame.
Indiana controlled play for the first 10 minutes of the second half, but it was Michigan for the 10 minutes after that. Though U-M controlled the majority of possession during that spell, the Wolverines were unable to break down the Hoosiers, the closest chance coming off an attempted bicycle kick in the box from Zakyi in the 58th minute.
The Hoosiers put the match out of reach with two goals in a three-minute span. Jeremiah Gutjahr made it 2-0 with a header at close range in the 73rd minute, followed shortly thereafter by a goal from Glass at the near post, capping the scoring.
The Wolverines now await their NCAA Tournament fate, which will be revealed tomorrow (Monday, Nov. 12) during the NCAA Selection Show. The online show will stream at NCAA.com at 1 p.m. Sixteen teams will receive first-round byes, and the other 32 teams will play first-round games Thursday (Nov. 15) at 16 campus sites.
