DENVER, Colo. -- University of Michigan redshirt junior Myles Amine cruised to an 11-2 major decision in his 174-pound match over Oklahoma State's Jacobe Smith at the National Wrestling Coaches Association's All-Start Classic on Friday night (Nov. 2) at the National Wrestling Complex.
After a scoreless first period, Amine broke the bout open in the second, scoring on a low leg attack before adding a four-point tilt and riding out the period. He gave up a reversal early in the third but iced the match midway through the frame as he added another low single takedown and riding out for 2:27 in advantage time.
It was the first collegiate meeting between Amine and Smith, who was an All-American last season after placing eighth at 174 pounds. Smith is ranked 10th nationally at 184 pounds. Amine is a two-time All-American, placing fourth and third in his first two NCAA Championships appearances. He starts the 2018-19 season ranked third in all major polls. The match was an exhibition, and the win will not count toward Amine's season record.
The bulk of the Wolverine squad will officially kick off the 2018-19 season Saturday (Nov. 2) at the annual Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Michigan. Action is slated for a 9:30 a.m. start at Jenison Field House and will be streamed live on Trackwrestling.com.
