ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Umar Farouk Osman bagged a double and junior Jack Hallahan collected three points of his own on a goal and an assist to lead the University of Michigan men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Penn State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Sunday (Nov. 4) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Hallahan (24 points) and Osman (21 points) are the first pair of teammates to collect 20-plus points in the same season since Soony Saad (43 points) and Justin Meram (42 points) in 2010. Senior Marcello Borges, senior Robbie Mertz and junior Lucas Rosendall were all credited with assists of their own on Sunday.
Sophomore goalkeeper Henry Mashburn played all 90 minutes in net, making one save. The Michigan defense was stout once again, limiting Penn State to just four shots -- all of which came in the first half.
The Wolverines opened the scoring in the 29th minute. Borges launched his throw-in into the box, but neither team was able to win it. The ball fell to Osman, who one-timed his shot past Levine and into the net to give Michigan a 1-0 lead. It was his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The Nittany Lions answered in the 43rd minute. Callum Pritchatt curled a corner kick to the far post and Ryan Gallagher headed it in, bringing the match level heading into halftime.
But it was all Michigan from there. The Wolverines kept the pressure on Penn State throughout the second half, generating five shots and 10 corner kicks. In the 52nd minute, a Hallahan corner was cleared away, but he tracked it down and sent a follow-up service into the box for sophomore Jackson Ragen, whose header missed the top corner by inches.
Michigan retook the lead in the 53rd minute. The service from a Hallahan corner was low into the box. After a Mertz back-heel pass, Penn State attempted to clear the danger, but sent it right to Osman, who roofed a left-footed shot into the top-left corner past Levine. It was Osman's second brace of the season (Sept. 14 at Rutgers).
The Wolverines put the match out of reach in the 81st minute. On the near side, Rosendall won the ball cleanly from a Penn State defender and dribbled freely into the box. He slotted it to Hallahan on the far side, who took a touch and brought it on his left before firing a shot that beat Levine, capping the scoring at 3-1.
The Wolverines, who are now unbeaten in their last three matches, will get a rematch with Wisconsin in the semifinals on Friday (Nov. 9) at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind. The Badgers won the regular-season matchup, 1-0, in double overtime back on Oct. 19 in Madison. The match will begin at 3:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
