ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan softball head coach Carol Hutchins announced Thursday (Dec. 13) that seniors Katie Alexander and Faith Canfield, and junior Madison Uden have been named captains for the 2019 season. The trio was selected by a team vote.
Alexander has built herself into one the nation's top catchers over her collegiate career, garnering 2018 NFCA All-Great Lakes Region and All-Big Ten second team honors. She has caught nine no-hitters, including a program-record six last season, and boasts a .996 career fielding percentage. She also posted a career-best .314 batting average in 2018 with five home runs and 24 RBI. Off the field, she is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
Canfield, a two-time NFCA All-America third team selection as a second baseman (2017, 18), has batted .390 or better in each of her last two seasons, including a team-best .391 average in 2018, with 43 runs, 77 hits and 38 RBI -- largely from the leadoff spot in the batting order. She has committed just four total errors over the last three seasons and owns a stellar .988 career fielding percentage. A team captain last season, Canfield is a two-time NFCA All-Great Lakes and All-Big Ten first team honoree.
Uden enjoyed a breakout season in her first year in the everyday lineup in 2018, and earned NFCA All-Great Lake Region first team honors after boasting a .357 batting average -- a 102-point improvement from her freshman season -- with 15 extra-base hits, 35 RBI and a .514 slugging percentage and .448 on-base percentage.
Michigan will kick off the 2019 season at the annual USF Wilson-Demarini Tournament, slated for Feb. 8-10, in Tampa, Florida. The Wolverines will face North Carolina State, Arizona, Florida, USF and Illinois State over their opening weekend.
