GILBERT, Ariz. -- University of Michigan field hockey team senior Emma Way and junior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort were named to Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-America teams, the NFHCA announced Tuesday (Dec. 4). Way was selected to the first team, while Fernandez Lacort earned third-team accolades.
Michigan has had an All-American on its roster in 21 of the last 22 years, with 26 Wolverines combining for 41 total honors. It is the 12th time in program history that Michigan boasted multiple All-America selections and its most since similarly garnering three in 2010.
Way is the 12th different U-M player to garner first-team honors in program history and the third in four seasons. She posted a career-best 19 goals in her final collegiate season, leading the Big Ten Conference -- and ranking 11th nationally -- with 0.90 goals per game this season en route to Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors. She scored in 15 of 21 games, with five game-winning goals, including back-to-back overtime game-winners against Pacific and Monmouth, and four multi-goal games. Way, who previously earned NFHCA All-West Region second-team honors last season, finished her career with 42 goals, 21 assists and 105 points. She ranks seventh among U-M's all-time career leaders in goals and points.
Fernandez Lacort garnered the first All-America honor of her career. The Wolverines' field general in the midfield, she has started every game over the last two seasons, splitting time between wing and center mid. She owns four career goals, including two game-winners, and 17 assists -- as the primary stick stopper on the Wolverine corner unit. She was named to the NFHCA All-West Region second team last season and was a 2018 All-Big Ten first-team honoree.
The Wolverines finished the 2018 season with a 14-7 record, including a perfect 9-0 home record at Phyllis Ocker Field, while capturing their second straight Big Ten regular-season title and reaching the NCAA quarterfinals.
