ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team dropped an overtime heartbreaker, 81-79, to Purdue on Thursday (Feb. 1) at Crisler Center. Purdue ended the fourth quarter on a 16-0 run to force overtime, where the Boilers outscored U-M by two (9-7).
Michigan had a trio of double-figure scorers in senior Katelynn Flaherty (24), junior Hallie Thome (20) and freshman Hailey Brown (18). Michigan shot 51.5 percent from the floor (34-for-66) but only got to the free-throw line six times in the contest, hitting three.
Flaherty converted a tough three-point play with 6:48 remaining in the game to push Michigan's lead to 16, 72-56, but it was the last time Michigan scored in regulation. Purdue closed the fourth quarter on a 16-0 run, which included the game-tying score with 0.7 seconds left. Michigan originally forced a miss on the possession but a jump-ball gave Purdue back the ball, and the Boilermakers converted the second time around.
Michigan ran a sideline out of bounds play for sophomore Kayla Robbins to go over the top and she was fouled on the play. The officials took nearly five minutes to confirm the foul occurred before time expired. After the foul was confirmed, Robbins stepped to the line but was long on both attempts to send the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Thome got the scoring started with a hook shot in the lane, followed by a Flaherty three at the top of the key to push Michigan on top, 77-74. The lead was short-lived as Purdue answered with a triple seconds later. Flaherty hit a pair of free throws with 1:22 left to nudge the Wolverines back in front by two, but another Purdue triple gave the Boilers the lead for good with 1:09 left.
On Michigan's final possession, Thome got a look at the basket and the shot had a chance but fell off the rim. Purdue hit one-of-two free throws to seal the two-point win.
Michigan was down by as many as seven points in the opening frame but got 10 points from Brown in the quarter to head to the second tied at 23.
Michigan went up, 41-30, on a Flaherty runner with 2:19 left in the second, but Purdue answered with six straight points to cut Michigan's lead to five, 41-36. Jillian Dunston found a cutting Flaherty for a layup with 18 seconds left before the half, sending Michigan to the break with a 43-36 lead.
Flaherty hit a triple in the corner to start the third, increasing Michigan's lead to 46-36 in the opening minute. Brown hit a pair of triples and Michigan got a layup from Flaherty in transition to push the lead to 13, 56-43, and force a Purdue timeout with 4:58 left in the third. Brown found Thome over the top to beat the shot clock for a 58-43 lead at the 3:43 mark of the third.
Brown found Nicole Munger for a corner triple with 8:02 remaining, followed by the Flaherty runner and three-point play to stake Michigan's 16-point lead (72-56) with 6:48 to go to set up the final sequence.
