• Coon Beats Olympic Gold Medalist Snyder in "Classic Match"
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Graduate-student heavyweight Adam Coon used a first-period takedown to hand No. 1 Kyle Snyder his first collegiate loss in more than two years as the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team dropped a close 18-15 dual to No. 2 Ohio State on bonus points Sunday night (Feb. 11) in front of a record 8,303 fans at Crisler Center.
Coon, ranked second in the national rankings, shot in on a single leg and came back up in his over-under position to toss Snyder to his back on the edge of the for the winning takedown -- though no back points -- and rode out the period. The two wrestlers traded escapes in the second and third, and Snyder could not finish on multiple leg attacks throughout the match. Coon improved to 22-0 on the season, while Snyder, an Olympic and two-time world champion, suffered his first loss since the 2015 NCAA finals.
Junior/sophomore Stevan Micic, ranked fifth, also handed second-ranked Luke Pletcher his first loss of the season with an 11-5 decision at 133 pounds. Micic, who fell to Pletcher in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational semifinals, gave up the first takedown but controlled the rest of the bout. Micic finished on four takedowns, including two in the third period, and accumulated 3:48 in riding-time advantage. Micic has won his last 11 matches since the Vegas tournament.
Like Coon and Micic, sixth-ranked senior/junior Myles Amine turned around a loss with a 6-5 decision against third-ranked Bo Jordan on a last-second takedown. After sacrificing an initial lead -- he scored out of a second-period danger position -- Amine trailed on riding time in the waning seconds of the third when he shot in on a single leg with 17 seconds remaining and finished for the takedown with just six seconds on the clock. Amine fell to Jordan in two previous meetings, including the semifinals at the CKLV tournament.
Senior/junior Alec Pantaleo, ranked seventh at 157 pounds, earned his second win of the season against fifth-ranked Micah Jordan with a 12-7 decision, but it was nearly more. Pantaleo pancaked Jordan to his back just 30 seconds into the match for six points, then locked up a cradle but couldn't get the call. Jordan crept back into the bout with a pair of takedowns, but Pantaleo iced the win with a third-period go-behind and 1:22 riding-time advantage.
Junior/sophomore Logan Massa, ranked ninth, rounded out Michigan's wins with a 6-2 decision against 14th-ranked Te'Shan Campbell at 165 pounds. Massa scored on an early single leg in the first period, added an escape and two stall points in the second and countered an OSU shot to ice it in the third. It was Massa's third straight win -- second over a ranked opponent -- after halting a sluggish stretch coming off an injury.
Michigan dropped the dual meet on bonus points but was awfully close to scoring another win at 184 pounds, when fifth-year senior Domenic Abounader, ranked fifth, lost a close 5-3 decision to second-ranked Myles Martin. Abounader gave up a pair of third-period takedowns but shot in deep on a single leg in the waning moments of the frame. After an extended, 20-second scramble, he spun around into a clear advantage position but it came just after the buzzer sounded.
The Wolverines (10-3, 7-2 Big Ten) will wrap up the dual-meet portion of their 2017-18 schedule on Sunday (Feb. 18) when they host in-state rival Central Michigan at 2 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. Michigan will honor its senior class before the dual. Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office.
