PYEONGCHANG, South Korea -- University of Michigan ice hockey alumnus Andrew Ebbett (2003-06) scored two goals in Team Canada's 6-4 win over Czech Republic to claim the bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics on Saturday (Feb. 24). Ebbett becomes the seventh Wolverine to earn a medal at the Olympic Games.
One of Team Canada's alternate captains, Ebbett appeared in five games for the Canadians over the tournament, registering three points (two goals, one assist) with a plus-three rating. Overall, Canada went 4-1-0-1, with its lone loss coming to Germany, 4-3, in the semifinals (Feb. 23).
Ebbett became the 16th Wolverine to compete in hockey at the Winter Olympics (eight USA, four Canada, one Austria, one Japan and one Sweden) and second alum to compete in these Olympics for hockey alongside former teammate Chad Kolarik (2005-08), who represented Team USA. Kolarik saw action in two games for the Americans, who reached the quarterfinals and finished with a 2-1-0-2 record.
Michigan has now had an ice hockey medalist at each of the last three Winter Olympics. Carl Hagelin (2008-11) won a silver medal with Sweden during the 2014 Sochi Games after Jack Johnson (2006-07) earned silver with Team USA in 2010 in Vancouver.
A four-year standout for the Maize and Blue, Ebbett amassed 143 points (38 goals, 105 assists) during his Michigan career. He helped lead U-M to three CCHA Tournament titles (2002, '03, '05) and was awarded the Hal Downes Trophy and the Howard Colby Award in 2006.
Ebbett is currently playing for Swiss club SC Bern of the National League A (NLA) and helped lead it to the 2016 Swiss Championship title, scoring five goals and 10 assists in 14 playoff contests. Through 37 games this season he has registered 41 points (12G, 29A). He has also won the Spengler Cup with Team Canada for two consecutive years (2016, '17).
