Wolverines Race Past Penn State at B1G Tourney

» Michigan led wire-to-wire in the contest and led by as many as 32 points in the win. All 10 Wolverines who were dressed for the contest saw action.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team never trailed and got a pair of 20-point games from senior Katelynn Flaherty and junior Hallie Thome, Â as the Wolverines knocked off Penn State, 77-48, in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday night (March 1) at Banker's Life Fieldhouse.
Thome led the way for the Maize and Blue with 22 points, nine boards and a pair of blocks. Flaherty scored 21 points as she hit five three-pointers and dished out five assists in 34 minutes. Sophomore Akienreh Johnson rounded out Michigan's double-figure scorers; she turned in 13 points with five boards and two assists. Michigan shot 49.2 percent (29-for-59) from the floor in the game and outrebounded Penn State by 20, 43-23.
Michigan raced out to a 13-4 lead, getting early production from Thome underneath and outside shooting from Flaherty, who capped the run with an 18-foot jumper off an offensive rebound from senior Jillian Dunston, which forced a Penn State timeout with 3:31 left in the first quarter.
With Michigan up eight points in the latter stages of the second quarter, Flaherty hit back-to-back triples to push the U-M lead to 14, 30-16, with 2:45 left and forced another PSU timeout.
Michigan led by as many as 15 in the frame but hit the break with a 32-20 lead after Penn State hit a running triple right before the halftime horn. Flaherty and Thome led the way with 14 points each in the first half.
Johnson came through with four straight points, scoring on a putback and in transition, which led to a Penn State timeout with 5:23 on the third-quarter clock and Michigan's lead up to 45-26. Freshman Deja Church scored in transition out of the break, giving U-M a 47-26 lead -- its largest of the game to that point.
Kayla Robbins drew a foul at the end of the third quarter and split a pair at the free-throw line to give U-M a 53-33 lead going to the final 10 minutes. Johnson opened the fourth quarter with a triple to beat the shot clock before finding junior Nicole Munger for a corner triple, pushing Michigan's lead to 59-33 with 9:01 left.
U-M never looked back after that, leading by as many as 32 points in the game, as all 10 Wolverines who were dressed saw action.
The Wolverines will face No. 3-seed Nebraska tomorrow (Friday, March 2) in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament at 9 p.m.
