TEMPE, Ariz. -- In its first meet of this outdoor season with representation across every event group, the University of Michigan men's track and field team turned in a well-balanced effort at the Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Challenge on Friday and Saturday (March 23-24) with top-five finishes in numerous events.
The Wolverines scored fifth-place-or-better finishes in eight different events spanning the sprints, distance and field events on the weekend, led for the second meet in a row by the two-time All-American Taylor McLaughlin.
McLaughlin missed out on two wins in a row at 200 meters by the narrowest of margins, edged out at the line by .004 in 21.34. He would be back later in the evening as he, Alex Schwedt, Vail Hartman and Desmond Melson combined to take third in the 4x400 relay in 3:14.64.
The relay was one of five third-place efforts on the weekend for Michigan. Elsewhere in the sprints and hurdles, Khoury Crenshaw opened up his outdoor season with a 10.69 (-0.1 meters-per-second wind) clocking at 100 meters, while Roland Amarteifio crossed the line in the 400-meter hurdles with a new career best at 52.96.
Amarteifio's performance was nearly four seconds superior to the 56.66 he posted at this same meet a year ago, and already better than the 53.24 he dropped at the Big Ten meet in 2017.
Anthony Berry and Andrew Lorant were the highest finishers for the meet, taking third at 800 meters and 3,000 meters, respectively. Berry claimed the win in the second heat of the 800 in 1:50.43, coming up just a quarter-second shy of the winning time from the faster heat in his victory.
Connor Mora turned in a strong performance in a similarly close competition at 1,500 meters, clocking a career-best 3:45.85 as part of a finish that saw five men within about a second-and-a-half of one another.
A more complete team likely will suit up for the Wolverines' next outing at the Battle of the Blues hosted by Duke on April 7, likely bolstered by the 2018 outdoor debuts of All-American throwers Joe Ellis, Grant Cartwright and Andrew Liskowitz.
