STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team ran its winning streak to six, winning the doubles point and sweeping all six singles matches to shut out Penn State, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon (April 1) at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center.
It was all Michigan in doubles as the Wolverines raced out to big leads on courts No. 1 and No. 3. At the top spot, the junior duo of Brienne Minor and Kate Fahey won four of the first five games en route to a 6-2 victory.
At No. 2, sophomores Chiara Lommer and Lera Patiuk roared back from a slow start to clinch the doubles point for U-M. The duo won the final four games in a 6-3 win to stake the Wolverines to a 1-0 lead.
In singles, Michigan and Penn State played courts 3-6 on the four indoor courts. U-M took all four first sets to seize control of the team match.
Minor put Michigan's second point on the board, winning 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. Minor took advantage of early breaks in both sets to record the straight-sets win.
Senior Mira Ruder-Hook accounted for the third point of the afternoon for the Maize and Blue, following the same script as Minor in a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5.
Patiuk clinched the team match for the Wolverines, rallying from a 3-0 deficit in the first set to take her match, 6-4. She won the final two games of the second set to wrap up a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 6.
Freshman Alyvia Jones came through with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph at No. 4 to complete the first four matches in favor of the Wolverines.
As two courts became available, Fahey and Lommer began their matches at the top two spots. Fahey cruised at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-3, 6-2 to push Michigan's lead to 6-0.
Lommer kept the Wolverines perfect on the afternoon, grinding out a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (4) win at No. 2. The lefty recovered from an early 3-0 hole in the first set and rallied to win it, 7-5. After falling behind in the second set and dropping it, it was all Lommer in the 10-point tiebreaker to wrap up the match.
