WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Overnight rain and strong winds made for unplayable conditions and forced the cancelation of the Boilermaker Invitational's final round as the University of Michigan men's golf team closed its regular-season schedule in eighth place with a 587 36-hole total at Purdue's finale held at the Kampen Course.
"We were really hoping to play the final round today because the leaders were in reach, especially if we had played with tough conditions," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "Our afternoon round yesterday was solid compared to the field, and we played better and better as the day went on."
Using yesterday's team tallies of 294 and 293, the Wolverines closed eighth in the 17-team field with a 587 total. It is the second time this season U-M has had an event shortened due to weather.
As he has done all season, Kyle Mueller guided Wolverines as he was the runner-up after back-to-back rounds of 70 (-2) helped him to a 140 (-4) total. With his sixth top-five individual finish of the season, he posted his ninth straight top 12 finish as well as his fourth top-three finish. With a four-under performance, Mueller has finished below par in all nine scoring events this season. In fact, 20 of his 25 rounds this season have been under par.
"Kyle put himself in position to win again this week," said Whitten. "He continues to prepare so smartly and make great on-course decisions."
Following behind Mueller was freshman Charlie Pilon, who, after opening with a 74 (+2), rallied with a 71 (-1) to post a 145 total and tie for 12th -- his second top 20 of the season. Fellow freshman Henry Spring rounded out U-M's top three, as he tied for 56th at 151 (75-76). Junior Nick Carlson returned from a sore shoulder to tie for 62nd at 152 (76-76).
"As we head toward the Big Ten, I'm also really encouraged by two freshmen -- Charlie and Henry," said Whitten. "They have both improved consistently all year and they're playing very good golf right now."
With the regular season completed, the Wolverines shift their focus to the postseason, which starts with the 2018 Big Ten Championships, set for Friday through Sunday, April 27-29, and will be played at the Baltimore Country Club in Baltimore, Maryland. The conference championship will be held at a neutral site for the seventh straight year.
