MANHEIM, Pa. -- Four members of the University of Michigan wrestling team were named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association's All-Academic team, the NWCA announced today (Thursday, April 19). Junior/sophomores Stevan Micic and Myles Amine earned the distinction for the second time in the career, while graduate students Kevin Beazley and Adam Coon are now three-time honorees.
Awarded annually, the NWCA All-Academic team is comprised of 155 student-athletes. Five Division I champions made the team, while seven additional runners-up were included. In all, 42 All-Americans were All-Academic selections. Of the 155 individuals, 123 were at minimum NCAA Division I qualifiers, up from 115 a year ago. The team GPA was determined using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program. A total of 10 of these came from the wrestlers that were entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier.
Amine, a business administration major, claimed NCAA All-America honors for the second time this season, claiming third place at 174 pounds while posting a 26-7 season record. He placed second at the Big Ten Championships. Amine is a two-time NWCA All-Academic and Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
Beazley, a sport management master's student, used a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships to qualify for NCAAs for the third time -- but season-ending injury forced him to withdraw from the national event. Beazley posted a 16-9 record, with no win more notable than his decision at Iowa that helped propel U-M past the Hawkeyes for the first time on the road since 2005. A 2017 NCAA All-American, Beazley is a three-time NWCA All-Academic honoree.
Coon, a space engineering master's student, led the Wolverine team with a 29-2 record and claimed heavyweight runner-up honors at both the Big Ten and NCAA Championships. He finished his collegiate career as a three-time NCAA All-American and two-time finalist. His 116-15 record ranks him sixth in program history with a .885 career winning percentage. Coon is a three-time NWCA All-Academic and Academic All-Big Ten honoree; he previously earned an undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering last spring.
Micic, a sociology major, also earned NCAA runner-up honors at 133 pounds to secure his second straight All-America citation. Micic captured the 2018 Big Ten title and posted a 26-3 season record, including a perfect 13-0 mark in dual meets. Micic is a two-time NWCA All-Academic and Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
