MAINVILLE, Ohio -- Using a season-low-tying 71 (-1) from senior Kathy Lim and a 74 (+2) from defending champion junior Elodie Van Dievoet, the University of Michigan women's golf team opened the Big Ten Championships with a 298, positioning the Wolverines seventh after 18 holes played at the TPC's River Bend.
"We hung in there despite a few little hiccups out there, which really kept our team in the mix," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "There's a lot of golf to play and we are mature enough to understand that. Kathy and Elodie had great back nine's and showed patience and resilience. Lots of golf left and we are excited for the next two days."
Following a 90 minute frost delay, the Wolverines began the 14-team conference championship off the 10th tee, paired with Minnesota and Nebraska. A slow start from the U-M six starters had the Wolverines in the middle of the field as they made the turn to the front side.
This is when Lim and Van Dievoet started to take over. Kim used four birdies and Van Dievoet followed with two birdies and seven pars to help the Maize and Blue maintain its seventh play position tallying a 298 team total -- the 11th sub-300 total of the season.
Using the back-nine spark, Lim paced the Wolverines, tying her season low with a 71 (-1) and putting her in a tie for fifth among the 84-player field. Van Dievoet finished with a 74 (+2) to help her crack the top 25 as she is tied for 21st. In her first conference event, freshman Ashley Kim rounded out U-M's top three, posting a 76 (T-41st).
The championship continues with 18 holes Saturday (April 21) at 9:30 a.m. The Wolverines will be paired with Wisconsin and Iowa, who both tallied 299 first round team totals.
