IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The third-seeded University of Michigan men's tennis team won the doubles point and clinched three singles victories en route to a 4-1 win over sixth-seeded Wisconsin on Friday afternoon (April 27) in the Big Ten Tournament at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. With the victory, U-M advances to the semifinals for the third consecutive season and will take on No. 2 seed Illinois tomorrow (Saturday, April 28) at 2 p.m. CDT.
The Wolverines claimed the doubles point with victories at Nos. 2 and 3. The duo of senior Alex Knight and freshman Harrison Brown made quick work at No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 triumph. Wisconsin earned a 6-3 win at No. 1 before the No. 72-ranked combination of senior Runhao Hua and freshman Mattias Siimar clinched the doubles point for the Maize and Blue with a 6-3 win at the two spot.
Michigan earned five out of six first set wins in singles play -- including three in a tiebreak. Senior Carter Lin won in straight-sets at No. 6 to claim U-M's second point of the afternoon, 6-4, 6-4. Siimar, playing at No. 4, won his first set by a score of 6-4, and then battled back from a 5-3 deficit to earn a 7-5 second-set victory to put Michigan on the brink of a team win at 3-0.
No. 15-ranked Knight won his first set with an 8-6 tiebreaker, then held on in his second set for a 6-4 win to push the Maize and Blue into the next round of the Big Ten Tournament. Wisconsin earned its lone point prior to the clincher with a win at No. 3.
Michigan advances to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament and will play No. 2 seed Illinois at 2 p.m. CDT in a rematch of last year's semifinal matchup.
