FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Brandon Piwinski notched an individual victory for the University of Michigan men's track and field team as the Wolverines completed the first of two days at Arkansas' National Relay Championships on Friday (April 27).
While relay events are set to take center stage on Saturday night at the National Relay Championships, Friday's program was comprised almost exclusively of individual events -- and no individual Wolverine shone brighter than Piwinski in his high jump win.
Piwinski -- chief among eight top-10 results posted by the Wolverines on day one -- cleared a collegiate career-best 2.11m (6 feet, 11 inches) for the win in the high jump, which was sealed when Corion Knight of Florida State passed two bars and missed at 2.17m (7-1.5).
Though he made his winning height on his first attempt, his biggest jump was arguably his third-and-final attempt at the previous height of 2.08m (6-9.75) that kept him alive and in contention for the win.
His winning height will very likely put him in position to earn a berth to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds as one of the East Region's top-48 in his event.
Already having locked up a third-consecutive trip to the East Prelims, Taylor McLaughlin tested his mettle against some of the nation's best in his signature 400-meter hurdles event and came away with a fifth-place result with a season's best 50.76. The performance was the two-time All-American's third sub-51-second clocking of the season.
Leading the way for the Wolverines in the short sprints was Khoury Crenshaw, who was aided by a stiff tailwind (+3.4m/s) to a season's best 10.42 over 100 meters for eighth place. The wind was just light enough to allow the mark for NCAA postseason qualifying purposes, and the time was fast enough to put him firmly on the bubble for qualification to the East Prelims.
Connor Mora headlined Michigan's day in the distance events, taking sixth over 1,500 meters in 3:46.71.
The distance squad also produced Michigan's only point of the day in the relay events -- the only events counted in the team standings for the National Relay Championships. The 4x1,500-meter relay team clocked 15:54.52 for eighth place.
Saturday night will feature the main relay program in which the most points will be up for grabs. Starting at 7 p.m. CDT, the Wolverines will field teams in the 4x800, 4x200, distance medley and 4x400 relays.
Field event action begins at 10:45 a.m. CDT as Joe Ellis looks to follow up on his school-record performance in the hammer throw from two weekends ago.
